Protective styles only protect hair when the routine underneath them is right. The most common damage we see in-salon isn't caused by the style itself — it's caused by what happens (or doesn't happen) in the six to eight weeks a client wears it.
Start every consultation by agreeing a wash-day interval before the style goes in, not after. Scalp buildup is the number one cause of early takedown requests, and a simple diluted-shampoo routine at the roots, applied every 10–14 days, solves most of it without disturbing the style.
Moisture is the second pillar: a leave-in or oil sealant applied to the scalp and visible lengths keeps both the natural hair and any added hair from becoming brittle. Teach clients to do this themselves between visits — a two-minute habit prevents a much longer repair conversation later.
Finally, set a hard takedown date at booking, not just a recommended one. Styles left in too long are the leading cause of breakage we see in client consultations, and a firm date protects both the client's hair and your reputation.
