How to Start a Fashion Label With Under KES 50,000

Every fashion entrepreneur we've mentored started with the same instinct — design first, figure out the money later. The graduates who actually launched did the opposite: they built a budget before a single sketch, and let it shape the collection.

With under KES 50,000, the winning move is a capsule of 3–5 pieces in one fabric, sourced in bulk from a single supplier rather than small quantities from several. Fabric bought in one run is cheaper per metre and keeps your first collection visually consistent, which matters more than variety when you have no brand recognition yet.

Sampling is where most budgets die. Cap yourself at two rounds of samples per piece — if the third round is still wrong, the pattern (not the fabric) is the problem, and no amount of extra fabric spend will fix it.

Sell before you produce the full run. A pre-order window, even just to your existing network, tells you exactly how many units to cut and turns your inventory risk into working capital instead of a bet.
