About the course
What you’ll learn
This is the hands-on counterpart to fashion design, and the skill clients pay for most directly. You begin with the machine itself: threading, tension, needle and foot selection, and the maintenance that prevents most sewing problems.
Pattern drafting follows — bodice, sleeve, skirt and trouser blocks taken from real measurements — then the manipulation that turns a block into a design. You learn to cut with grain, and why ignoring grain is why a garment twists after one wash.
Construction covers seams, finishes, closures, linings and pressing, with a strong emphasis on the inside of the garment. Fitting and alteration close the course, since most paid work in Kenya is bespoke or alteration rather than mass production.
